Trail Highlights
Poughkeepsie Gulch is a must-do trail for off-road enthusiasts in the San Juan Mountains, offering a mix of technical challenges and breathtaking scenery. The trail begins with a winding path through dense forests before transitioning into rocky climbs and open valley views. Notorious for The Wall, a formidable rock obstacle requiring experience, larger tires, and possibly a winch, the trail also offers bypass routes for those looking to avoid extreme challenges. Along the way, drivers will encounter boulder-strewn sections, shelf roads, and water crossings, all leading up to the pristine Lake Como, a perfect lunch spot surrounded by stunning alpine peaks.
Beyond its technical appeal, Poughkeepsie Gulch rewards adventurers with some of the most scenic landscapes in the region. The route is lined with waterfalls, wildflowers, and panoramic views, making it a favorite for those who enjoy both challenging wheeling and natural beauty. There are several excellent camping spots along the trail, including a great spot roughly 1.5 miles in, which offers great views and space for multiple vehicles. While the trail is rated around a challenging without The Wall, high clearance and good tire placement are crucial for navigating its rocky terrain.

Things To Consider
- Typically Open – June through October, depending on snow and trail conditions. Seasonal closures may apply, especially in early summer due to lingering snow.
- Technical Off-Roading with Bypasses – While some sections feature moderate rock crawling, including The Wall, bypass routes make it possible for lower-clearance 4WD vehicles to navigate the trail.
- Perfect for Adventure Photography – Stunning alpine scenery, waterfalls, and Lake Como at the summit provide excellent photo opportunities.
- Challenging Yet Rewarding – A great alternative to extreme trails like Black Bear Pass, offering a mix of technical sections and scenic terrain.
- Best Seasons to Visit – Fall (September–October) showcases golden aspens, while summer (July–August) offers peak wildflowers, mild temperatures, and great camping options.
TRAIL NOTE** THE WALL – This is an extreme obsticle and many Jeeps with 3″ lifts and 38″ have a hard time getting up it. Even getting to the wall is difficult. It’s possible to do it in smaller vehicles but roll overs and broken parts are possible.
