Trail Highlights
Nestled in the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains, Mineral Creek is a thrilling off-road trail that challenges drivers with a mix of technical obstacles, steep shelf roads, and breathtaking alpine views. As a key connector to Engineer Pass and Poughkeepsie Gulch, this trail is a favorite among off-road enthusiasts looking for an adventure that blends natural beauty with demanding terrain. With sections that feature off-camber angles, rocky ledges, and narrow passageways, Mineral Creek is not for the faint of heart, but for those who enjoy a technical drive, it’s an exhilarating experience that rewards skill and patience.
Rated as moderate to difficult, this trail is best suited for experienced drivers in well-equipped 4×4 vehicles, though some stock vehicles can make it through with careful line selection. Narrow rigs have an advantage, as the tight sections make passing a challenge, especially during peak traffic. Recent erosion has added new obstacles, making certain spots trickier than in previous years. However, for those willing to take on the challenge, Mineral Creek offers stunning high-altitude scenery, historic mining remnants, and a true test of off-road skill, making it one of the most exciting trails in Colorado’s backcountry.

Camping on Mineral Creek
Camping options along Mineral Creek are limited but available. Dispersed camping is permitted along the trail, with designated campsites. The largest camping area is at the Poughkeepsie Gulch intersection, offering more space for multiple vehicles or groups. However, due to the trail’s popularity and challenging terrain, these spots can fill up quickly, and campers should plan accordingly. The remote nature of these sites means there are no amenities, so be prepared to pack out all waste and follow Leave No Trace principles. We always recommend a rooftop tent when camping on or near trails.
