Trail Highlights
Grizzly Lake Offroad Trail in Buena Vista, Colorado, is a thrilling yet challenging route that rewards those who conquer it with breathtaking alpine scenery and a pristine high-elevation lake. The adventure begins immediately with the Gatekeeper, a steep and rocky obstacle that sets the tone for the rest of the trail. Vehicles with 37-inch tires or larger often make it up unassisted, while those on 35s or with longer wheelbases may need to winch. Beyond this, the trail is a relentless mix of rocky climbs, off-camber shelf roads, and boulder-strewn sections that keep drivers engaged. The infamous shelf road just past the wall obstacle is especially nerve-wracking, making for a slow, technical ascent. Seasonal conditions play a significant role in difficulty—early in the season, deep snow can block progress, while summer brings rain and mud that can make the trail even more challenging.
Despite its demanding terrain, the trail is widely regarded as worth the effort, with Grizzly Lake providing a stunning and peaceful reward at the end. The crystal-clear waters, surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, make for an incredible destination, especially for those who enjoy fishing or remote camping. The lake area only has a handful of campsites and because this trail is rated extreme, lucky visitors often have the entire place to themselves. While not the most extreme trail in Colorado, Grizzly Lake is a technical and bumpy ride that requires skill, patience, and a well-equipped vehicle.

Things To Consider
- Typically Open From – Late June through October, depending on snowfall.
- Vehicle Requirements – A high-clearance 4×4 is a must, with 37”+ tires recommended. Lockers and a winch can be helpful.
- The Gatekeeper Obstacle – The toughest section comes right at the start. If you can’t make it past this, you won’t make it up the rest of the trail.
- Technical Terrain – Expect rock crawling, off-camber shelf roads, and steep climbs. Every section demands careful navigation.
- Trail Time – This is an out and back trail and although relatively short, the trail takes longer than expected due to its difficulty. Plan for several hours to reach the lake and return.
- Camping & Fishing – Limited camping spots are available at the lake, and fishing is excellent. Arriving early increases your chances of securing a good site.
- Shelf Roads & Exposure – Some sections, particularly after the wall obstacle, are narrow with steep drop-offs. Precision driving is key.
- Trail Etiquette & Safety – Use tree straps when winching, stay on designated paths to prevent erosion, and be mindful of others on the trail.
TRAIL NOTE** Gate Keeper is very challenging. Many lifted jeeps on 37’s struggle to get up this section. Be prepared to work for the reward.

Camping on Grizzly Lake
While camping at the end of Grizzly lake can either be a boom or bust. Because of the extreme nature of this trail it is typically more open than most. There are plenty of other great places to camp on and around the trail. Buena Vista is a popular offroading destination in the summer but because of the large area it covers offroaders can typically find plenty of great places even during busy summer weekends. Of course we always recommend arriving early to secure a great spot and having a rooftop tent makes for the best experience.
